Mikey Estrada

Representing a new creative generation

Representing a new creative generation

Mikey is an embodiment of the present future. His persona, style, thinking and behaviour all come together to create a live, flesh and bone version of the contemporary, elevated “American dream”. Born and raised in LA, Mikey Estrada dropped out of school to figure out what his vision for this life was and build his personal brand.

Starting out with photography, Mikey was the youngest person brought on by Instagram to host a ‘Meet up’. With a growing network of co-creators and followers, Mikey then moved on to working in fashion as a designer. Still in his early twenties, Mikey has already set up his own clothing company, which his wife now runs, and the collections they have created are sold in high-end stores around the world. His pieces get tagged on larger than life celebrities on social media, yet he will not settle.

“Being satisfied is not an option,” says Mikey. He needs to feel as though he is ever evolving and improving his work, he tells me as we get to know each other over a drink in a Copenhagen courtyard. As a result, since moving to Scandinavia about five years ago, he has gradually transitioned over to working with interior design and styling.

Mikey sees an empty space for his generation and vision on the Danish interior scene. He explains that his process is very “chop chop” and gestures with his hands that he gets things done. He finds the tempo in Copenhagen a lot slower than that of LA but says that he needs the calm and quiet here. “I am a person that knows what I like and do not like and either we click and do something together or we do not”, he adds. Everything is very instant and present for Mikey who explains that when he has an idea, he executes it straight away and prefers to do everything himself, although he usually works with a team.

‘I am a person that knows what I like and do not like and either we click and do something together or we do not.’

Mikey Estrada, 2020

Inspired by his parent’s 70s lifestyle and having a rock ’n’ roll attitude, it is surprising how informed and educated on design Mikey is. On the other hand, he represents a generation with information overload provided by the internet and a DIY spirit where all you need to know is accessible to you through tutorial videos on social media.

Mikey sees himself as an independent person who needs to be working for himself and you can tell he has an incredible drive and creative dedication. There is no denying that he has already achieved a great deal and will be trailblazing the industry in his own, confident but laid-back manner. For Mikey is not loud, rather he is carefully considered and bold, unafraid and untouched by other people’s opinions.

‘Being satisfied is not an option.’
